After discovering the "stylograph" in America, Riepe developed it into the ballpoint pen he called the "Tintenkuli". The name stuck: even today "Kuli" is a byword for an entire genus of writing instruments throughout the German-speaking world.  From the mid-Thirties, Riepe practiced genuine image advertising by giving his growing product line a distinctive red ring - hence the name "rotring". Eventually, in 1972, the entire company was renamed "rotring-Werke Riepe KG".  Now, as a tribute to the founding of the company, the rotring 1928 is being issued in a limited, numbered edition of 1,928 items.
