In 1952 Pentel's water color and crayon factory became the first art supply factory in Japan to be designated as a JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) approved factory.

The success of the quality control program convinced us to adopt it as a management tool as well.  As a result, Pentel was awarded the 1976 DEMING AWARD.  Awarded annually in recognition of those manufacturers dedicated to product quality, the Deming Award has been given to such well-known companies as NEC, Nissan and Toyota, to name but a few.  Pentel remains the first and only stationery goods manufacturer to be honored with this prestigious award.
