It was in 1838 when Carl Hornemann, a chemist, began to produce paints for artists and painting utensils by himself. Until then, his father had imported these articles at exorbitant prices from France and England to sell them in his little shop in the old town center of Hanover.
The official date when the company was founded is April 28, 1838. On this very day, Carl Hornemann's Paint and Ink Factory sent out its first printed price list to its customers.
After having joined the company as production manager in 1863, the chemist Günther Wagner takes over the firm. As a means of clear identification, Wagner labels all his products with the pelican, which is part of his family's coat of arms, and has it officially registered as one of Germany's first trade marks
After Fritz Beindorf, a merchant, takes over the company in 1895, its expansion can no longer be stopped. New products, such as fountain pen ink, water colors and various types of glue, can be successfully exported and gain the company international recognition. As many as 236 employees work for Pelikan in 1901 and the turnover has exceeded 1 million Reichsmark
